Today my unhealthy obsession with The Archers lead to my new, healthy obsession with a pre, post workout and anytime snack discovery. It would work as a good breakfast solution on busy days too.  I am talking about KEFIR. 

Why Try?

The yoghurt-like drink is a sharper, cleaner, creamier version packed with nutrients & probiotics which are good bacteria to help aid weight loss, improve digestion, help build a stronger immune system, better skin – not to mention helping to fight disease. In addition, Kefir is touted as a remedy for common heath conditions, including acne, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation, depression, diabetes, eczema, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insomnia and IBS.

What is it?

So I have left this until last because I don’t want to discourage you from trying this latest trendy snack; as much as I adore the BBC Radio 4 rural drama they didn’t really sell it hence the reason I have only just tried it.  Kefir is a fermented milk product made with starter grains. Again do not let this hold you back from trying it! 

How to use it

Firstly it could be used as a breakfast shot or drink similar to other probiotic type drinks. Use Kefir instead of milk on granola or muesli for breakfast.  Add Kefir to fruit, nuts and oats for a longer smoothy drink. I tried it with segments of blood orange, a small handful of nuts and shaved dark chocolate finished with a mint leaf or two for a pudding to satisfy my sweet tooth after an evening meal! You can be much more adventurous than this also like using in salad dressings, pasta sauces and even as a starter for sourdough.

Make it yourself

The next step for me is to try making Kefir at home, this will save me money for sure, it looks extremely easy, takes minimal time and effort.  I have previously made yoghurt at home & this will be far similar.  All you need to do is purchase Kefir grains which are actually not grains but are tiny cell structures of bacteria and yeast that ferment the milk; again this sounds like being back at chemistry in school but trust me is much more fun!
